Arts as Therapy

I have always had a passion for making art and creating things. I enjoy painting, drawing, crafts, sculpture, and making jewelry. I like to incorporate art and creativity into my lesson plans and interventions. Art gives children a chance to express themselves and gain confidence. I look forward to incorporating art, crafts, and creativity into my treatment plans as often as possible, as it can be used to facilitate, fine and gross motor skills, coordination, muscle endurance, activity tolerance, emotional regulation, sensory integration, and leisure exploration.

Working with a client with Agenesis of the Corpus Colosum to build expressive and fine motor skills through painting.

Guitar and music: I am an amateur guitar player and have enjoyed the ways I can incorporate music when working with children. I find that allowing children, and adults, the opportunity to dance and sing can help to alleviate stress, encourage play/leisure, and and allow for creative expression. I also had the experience of playing music for older patients with Alzheimer’s, and was amazed at how positively they reacted when they recognized the songs I played. There is great power in music, and I hope to use it to motivate my future patients.

Labyrinth – for self care and mindfulness , goal oriented and making the space your own when you needed a purpose and building a beautiful thing

I enjoy being creative and making things that are purposeful and important to me. I practice mindfulness and look for creative ways to promote self-care in my life. I decided to build a walking labyrinth in my backyard. I would go on long walks and collected each stone, one by one. After I planned and built the labyrinth, I was able to walk it when I needed to center myself or relax. Both the process and the product were a part of my mindfulness practice. I hope to encourage my clients to create space for self-care in their lives and to use my knowledge of mindfulness to to teach clients to manage stress and improve emotional regulation.

Gardening – I enjoy gardening and caring for plants in my free time. There are an almost infinite ways to incorporate gardening into Occupational Therapy sessions. I did not always have a green thumb, but through practice and developing a watering routine, I have learned to care for house plants and a vegetable garden. Gardening has brought me so much joy over the past several years, and I look forward to using the knowledge I have acquired to teach others and creatively incorporate it into my OT career.

Professional Development Goals

Professional Development Assignment AssignmentSummer 2019

a. Identify the area for growth.

b. In 1-2 sentences, briefly state how development in this area will enable you to become a more effective practitioner as you begin entry-level practice.

c. Write a corresponding professional development goal for each area of growth that is specific, measurable, and includes a time frame for completion.

d. Identify a minimum of 1 specific resource which will help you to achieve your goal.

Ethical Practice:

  1. From my observations, there is a disconnect between how we are taught about ethics in the classroom and how practitioners actually behave in large medical systems.  I am concerned that I will be asked to behave in ways that I feel are unethical in order to keep my job and keep my productivity numbers up.  I will need to learn to navigate the bureaucracy of medical systems in order to work toward changes and to address ethical concerns.  I am willing to speak up, but need to focus on addressing issues respectfully and following the correct procedures.
  2. I will take the time before beginning any fieldwork or job placement to read the handbook and understand the chain of command for reporting ethical concerns.  I will then ask the head of my department to clarify if I am understanding the information correctly.  I will make sure to address the correct person with any concerns before I publicly speak out.  There is often more to the story and I want to make sure to have the whole story before taking action.   I  plan to seek out employment opportunities in facilities/settings that I feel are ethically treating patients to the best of their abilities over making profit.
  3. My Dell Children’s Welcome letter has a link to professional modules to complete regarding hospital policy.  I also ask my Clinical Instructor to clarify situations so that I have a better understanding of what information I do not have access to as a student.

Interpersonal skills:

  1. I need to work on my communication skills.  I like to communicate very directly in order to address problems quickly and professionally.  I am working towards identifying the  communication styles of those I am working with.  I will have to work to understand the culture of my team and the expectations of communication between team members.
  2. Before beginning my level 2 fieldwork on July 6, I will review communication styles and review relevant information from my interpersonal communication textbook.  I seek feedback from those I work with closely, on a regular basis.
  3. “Social Exchanges:  Interpersonal Skills for College & beyond” by Tasha F. Davis

Knowledge

  1. I have so much to learn!  I will need to make a point to always continue learning, seeking EBP, and keeping up to date with the latest legislative developments.  I make a point to take a few minutes, as I chart review, to look up any diagnoses or terminology I am not familiar with or need to review.
  2. I will continue to review information and read up on the latest information in my area of practice.  I plan to complete my continuing education courses as required, after obtaining my license.
